Where to start

First off i would like to give credit to u/Xefjord for making this chart in this old thread he had made. https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/51cszg/what_do_you_think_of_this_chart_for_language/

I was looking at it to try and figure out where I could start to learn Chinese. (I am currently using duolingo looking for more options)

The general consensus for the thread was that learning to read first (contradicting the chart) would lay the groundwork for writing and reading. I was hoping for recommendations for books about the basic grammar structure/how to read for mandarin and others thoughts/opinions on what else I could do to start.

I was thinking of these 2 books to start then proceed to maintain reading while using other mediums to learn writing and cognitive speech.
