Stories about double standards when it comes to learners versus natives

I feel like as a language learner living in a foreign country there is a certain pressure to always be at peak performance levels or people (especially strangers) will automatically assume there is a communication barrier. Maybe you just weren't listening to what the person was saying, or had an honest brainfart, for example giving a storeclerk the wrong amount of money due to being tired and not fully thinking about how a number translates into real bills and coins. It's a bit unfair that there is usually no benefit of the doubt in situations like these, I mean sometimes people just have plain stupid moments, even when interacting with people in their native language. However, there isn't much you can do about it, it's embarrassing and disheartening but either there was a language problem and you find a way to fix it or you just had a bad day and forget about it. I am curious though to hear your stories about situations where you were treated differently from native speakers in some way, for whatever reason.
