Is Duolingo an organized way to learn a language?

When I'm self teaching myself anything, I like to be very systematic / organized and take notes that are easy to understand and review.

For example in Japanese, I learned the alphabets column by column, since it made sense the way they were grouped. I was curious so i hopped on Duolingo, and it seemed to be showing me these things "out of order" sometimes showing a random character, sometimes a random word, I found it hard to take good notes.

Any advice on how to use Duolingo effectively, should I be using it at all?
