It’s fine if people want to quit language learning

Every time someone posts about losing motivation, wanting to give up, not being sure whether to keep studying, etc, there’s a swarm of comments encouraging that person to keep going and they’ll make it. But you know what? It’s cool if people want to quit language learning.

Most people don’t really know what they’re getting into when they decide they want to learn X language. The 8,000 language learning resources that exist and are sold have convinced the overwhelming majority of people that language learning is easy and fast. Just 15 minutes of Duolingo a day and you’ll be fluent! Just 3 months of study and you’ll be B2! Wow!

The reality is that language learning is a long process full of stumbling and flailing about. Not only do you need to learn about how to learn, but you then need to gather tons of resources and then constantly disregard and incorporate new strategies and methods for improving your reading, writing, speaking, and listening as your abilities improve or stagnate.

So of course people give up. They should—they thought it would take 6 months at 30 minutes a day or whatever when they decided to learn the language and they thought they could do it all with a single app. They didn’t know how involved of a process it really is, especially for people who want to get really good at that language. They didn’t know that it’s going to take hundreds of hours before you even begin to express yourself coherently, and years of daily exposure before you begin to speak and comprehend at anything approaching a native level.

I think a sub like this is more helpful when it gives people realistic expectations about language learning instead of just constant encouragement. Sure, some people will realize it’s much more time-consuming than they thought, and move on, but that’s fine. Other people will realize that they’re going to need to commit more time to the project before they get the results that they want. And that’s cool too.
