so i love learning languages, absolutely adore it like yes gimme that knowledge and i've been slowly learning basic korean over the past year or so but here's the thing: i don't want people to think i'm a koreaboo.
i've always been intrigued with languages that have a completely different alphabet to english, and have always wanted to learn an eastern asian (eg. mandarin, japanese, korean) language simply because i like the way they sound lol. and do you really need a deep and meaningful reason to learn a language?
anyway about a year or so ago i got into kpop because i finally decided to check out who this 'bts' everyone was talking about were. what this meant for me was that i now had a lot more music i enjoyed, because korean music is a big world, and there's a lot of it, and i just kept discovering more and more. now, when you're listening to music in a language that you don't speak, you kind of want to learn it just to be able to get the full impact of the song right? well that's what it was for me anyway. so i decided to add korean to the list of languages i was 'learning' (i'm a deadly procrastinator, so learning is a bit of a stretch)
at first i saw no issue. i was just learning a language that was now a part of my life, because some of my favorite songs were in that language. i used to listen to a bunch of french songs, german songs, whatever. i was never someone to exclusively listen to songs in english because music is universal and is above all language barriers yknow.
BUT THEN KOREABOOS
as with anything there's always gonna be someone who's obsessed. now there's a lOt of people learning korean because they want to be korean and not because they have a genuine interest in the language as a language and i just don't want to be mistaken for one. so i was gonna ask, if you're learning korean, what was your motivation to start? and also what do you think makes a koreaboo? how do i avoid people thinking i'm one lmao
