Of all of the languages that I think have a good argument into becoming an official language of the United Nations, I think Portuguese has the best bet. Around 237 - 260 million people speak it (French has ~ 274 million, Arabic has around 255 - 313 million speakers, and Russian has approximately 265 million). Portuguese spans several continents: South America (Brazil), Europe (Portugal), Africa (Cabo Verde, Angola, Mozambique, etc.), Asia (East Timor and Macau, although it's weak there).
There's a lot more to include here, but I'm interested in seeing what the language learning community has to say about the status of Portuguese in the United Nations.
