Why does Switzerland keep being used as an example of a German-speaking country?

I often see people talking about Switzerland in the context of learning German language, e.g. "you should learn German because XYZ countries speak it", and it almost always includes Switzerland. I don't understand why, seeing how the vast majority seems to speak Swiss German which is quite different from Standard German and often unintelligeable even for the native German speakers.

Is there a reason behind it (like people assuming that Swiss will learn Standard German in school and will be able to understand it anyway) or is it just pure ignorance?
