I am in the early stages of learning a language but a friend told me something that demotivated me.

So, I'm trying to learn Russian to a proffiecient level. I told my friend that I was learning Russian and he advised me not to as he believes that in only a few years, real-time language translation technology will be more prevelent and that there is no other reason to learn a language other than the interlectual challenge. What are your opinions on this topic? Is it pointless to learn a language nowadays?
