Don't know how to start the exchange... Or maybe just paranoia...

So... I installed a language exchange messaging app yesterday night (bilingua if anyone is curious) and wanted to start practicing my Japanese, but after registering, looking at a number of matches and picking someone, I suddenly realised I really don't know how to start. I just typed こんにちは, then I got lost for words and realised that I honestly don't know how to do this thing...

Or maybe I'm just making excuses because I'm paranoid...

So anyone's got tips or help?
