How do people get Latin meanings from their name?

How do people know Marisa means “of the sea”, Ella means “Beautiful Fairy” or that Sarah means “Princess”?

Are these linguistically accurate? Were they words? What gives them their meaning?

Why do so many names derive from Latin?
