Do you think it is important when a nation has its own language or not?

I live in Belarus and I am Belarusian by nationality. And the majority of the population is also Belarusians. Many in the world know that we have our own language - Belarusian. The second official language in our country is Russian language. For various reasons (mainly because of the policy of the authorities) it so happened that the Belarusian language is almost completely replaced by Russian in all spheres of life. Many citizens frankly laugh at Belarusian language and call it "rural", they are proud of its ignorance, and their children do not understand it at all.

However, according to the melodic sound it recognized by UNESCO as the second language after Italian.

Some of my friends say that you shouldn't regret this and that language is just a means of communication and you need to think more globally. Perhaps, I partially agree with them and on the scale of the planet this is not a problem at all.

But at the same time, I'm very sad that we lose it.
