I made a language app that allows you to get your writing and pronunciation checked by native speakers in real time.

I'm often unsure if what I write or say in another language is right and sounds natural, so I decided to make an app that allows anyone to get their sentences checked by native speakers. I named it Yask (the name is a long story :)).

Yask tries to improve upon the experience of language forums and Q&A sites, with a somewhat experimental interface and the addition of the following features:

  • Efficient interface: Just write the sentence you want to check and send it.
  • Quick responses: Helping others is optimized to take the least effort possible. That means that receiving responses is quick as well (usually within minutes, depending on the language).
  • Instant responses: For translation requests, you'll first get an automatic translation that then gets checked by native speakers in real time.
  • Response evaluation: By using Natural Language Processing and weighting the user votes by their reputation, Yask evaluates all responses and highlights the best one.
  • Auto-translated comments: Receive explanations or clarifications in any language and see them in your own language.
  • Pronunciation: Finally, but very important, you can also use Yask to get feedback about your pronunciation.

The app is totally free. Instead of premium features, everything in Yask is based on your merit alone, so the more you help others, the more features you'll have available (up to the point when you catch up with what I have been able to code so far!).

Some of the things coming in the near future:

  • More languages. (It currently works in 13 languages).
  • Language variants.
  • Improve the intelligence of the app (precision of the evaluation, speed of responses, etc).
  • More language learning features such as daily exercises.
