Anyone here ever learned a creole/pidgin? What was it like?

Hey there r/languagelearning.

I'm thinking of picking up some Cameroonian Pidgin English in my spare time, as I'm going to be traveling there soon. I'm a native English speaker, and I assume that's going to be a huge advantage in learning the language, but then again I might be overestimating its usefulness.

Has anyone here ever learned a pidgin or creole? Was it harder than you thought, or could you just pick it right up based on your knowledge of its base language?

And where can I find resources for Cameroonian pidgin? :P
