A site called Chessable has shown me what Memrise and Duolingo should be.

I came across a site called Chessable this week and it incorporates the gamification aspects of other sites like Memrise and Duolingo in ways that will be familiar to everyone on this sub (watering, streaks, earning gems, leader boards, etc), but with additional aspects of learning that take it to the next level.

  1. Publishers of chess books are able to create online versions of their print books and sell them. These online versions are interactive, take advantage of the SRS features of the site, and can incorporate text and video.
  2. Community created courses can take advantage of the same features mentioned above.
  3. Courses can be free or they can be sold. Courses can be sold as both text only or text and video.
  4. The video and text are presented to the right of the interactive learning components. So the instructor explains the reasons behind certain moves and structures and then the student is given the opportunity to make the correct moves.
  5. Due to the SRS component the lines and theory that you learn in the course are drilled again and again over time. You can also review positions that you are not mastering easily.

After using this site for a few days I am quite simply disappointing in the tools that we have as language learners. Particularly at the A levels, courses like this would be amazing, especially if paired with offline material from publishers. I'm thinking of all the possible ways that vocabulary and grammar acquisition can be improved as well as how the site creators have basically made it a platform that publishers can use to enhance their course material without having to build the tools required (something the publishers themselves will be very bad at because it's not their primary objective).
