How to Learn Japanese in a Year

I am planning on visiting Japan next year. However, I do not know Japanese.

I would like to learn enough Japanese to be able to get around by myself without a guide and have basic conversation with others.

What's the best way to do this? Do I just simply take courses in language classes/community college? Or is there something like Rosetta Stone or Duolingo that is effective?
