Insights and Tips for Global Scholars

Hey everyone!

I recently wrote an article titled "How Long Does It Take to Learn a Language Fluently: Timelines and Tips for Global Scholars" and thought it might resonate with many of you here. It's based on insights from the Foreign Service Institute’s language difficulty rankings and includes practical tips for accelerating your learning journey.

I'd love to hear any personal experiences you've had with the languages mentioned. Do you find the FSI’s timelines accurate based on your learning experience? Any tips or tricks you've discovered that could benefit fellow language learners?

Here's the link to the article: https://blog.hslu.ch/majorobm/2024/03/17/how-long-does-it-take-to-learn-a-language-fluently/

I enjoy listening to some Spanish music but I don’t understand the words, so I guess I’m just wondering if listening to it is going to help me learn the language faster or if it won’t really make a difference

I recently just got done completing a beginner workbook for spanish called "easy Spanish step-by-step"

I honestly didn't really feel like I enjoyed it or absorbed a lot of the information, most of the exercises I failed, and still feel at times my vocabulary was lacking completely on some exercises to where I couldn't complete or answer them. Any of the reading comprehension sections I could read and pronounce the words out loud to myself, but I wasn't able to comprehend or derive meaning from any of them. The book took me 4 months to complete all 15 units.

I guess I'm just wondering how do I proceed now as a beginner? I have some listening practice to Spanish podcast but I still don't really enjoy it and can't comprehend them. I also went through a 2k retold vocab deck but I didn't feel like any of the words stuck in my brain.

My main goal with Spanish is to be able have spoken conversations/conversational with native speakers and to be able to listen and understand movies and tv shows, music and or podcasts.

There's an advanced Spanish step-by-step book as well that's next in the book learning series but i wanted to seek advice on continued study before I bought it, hesitating exactly how much grammar I need to learn?

hi! i live in Finland and i have a Finnish boyfriend, but since I’m a foreigner we have to speak English together. today I’ve learned that it’s kind of exhausting for my boyfriend to speak English every day despite he’s perfectly fluent in it, so I would like to make it easier for him somehow. It doesn’t bother me because I have no choice but to speak English as long as I’m not fluent enough in Finnish yet, but I am learning at the moment and I speak English pretty fluent so I can express my thoughts and feelings clearly. does anyone have any advice on it? how do other international couples deal with this “emotional” language barrier? thank you! :)

Hey guys,

I will be visiting Italy for the first time this summer and therefore decided to learn italian.

I always wanted to learn another language and this seems like the best opportunity to start with one.

I have around 4 months until I will go to Italy and my goal is to be able to talk with some natives. For example I want to order something, have basic conversations etc. nothing to fancy.

What should I focus on?

For now I started to learn some basic with Busuu/Duolingo. But soon I plan on swithching to just learning vocabs and Italki conversations + reading and listening with comprehensible input.

Is this a good way to go? What are some practical tips?

I will not focus on writing or advanced grammar for now

Why do some people bemoan the usage of loan words in their language? You can find people in any language who generally oppose the usage of loan words and believe that neologisms should be constructed from suffixes and components that are already present in the language they want to “protect” from loan words.

Living in Quebec, you often hear of language purists who complain about the usage of anglicisms in the French language. The provincial government and the language body that oversees the usage of the French language have taken out ads that attempted to dissuade people from using anglicisms. Some of the French teachers I had would go on tangents about how anglicisms like “oppurtunité” are ruining the French language. One of my teachers hated the word “oppurtunité” so much that she would dock points from you every time you used the word. In Quebec, these types of complaints are often taken to unreasonable extremes. The word opportunity is actually a loan word from Middle French. Many of the words that Quebecois language purists inveigh against are words in English that were borrowed from French.

Why are some people against loan words on principle? Languages are not static and are constantly evolving. The lexicon of a language like French is enormous, so I don’t understand how some words borrowed from English will “ruin the language.” Loan words have always been a thing and when they are implemented in a language, they are altered so that the word fits in with the structure of the language. For most languages, loan words constitute a small percentage of the total lexicon of a language. I see loan words as a positive because they allow for cultural exchange, enrich the lexicon of a language and expand one’s expressivity. Why do some people see loan words as something nefarious?

Hi there - my friend and I made this tool to help practice speaking the languages we are trying to learn (Spanish and Italian). We didn't want to pay for a language tutor and wanted to be able to practice whenever we wanted - leading us to try to build a tool to help with this. I wanted to ask this community to try it out - it currently has a 7-day free trial so hopefully thats long enough for people to test it out and provide some feedback. Really want to continue to develop this to be helpful to as many people as possible - so feel free to provide feedback via this thread or pm me! Link to the website is in the comments below. Thanks in advance!

Learning vocabulary

I have been learning Russian for around two weeks now. I have bought the penguins classic book for Russian and making my way through it, making my way through the zero to fluency series on YouTube, and doing duolingo - I know it’s not supposed to be great but I quite like doing it at school when I have nothing to do and the streak system adds motivation tbh. But I have been also trying anki and I don’t find me remembering the vocabulary. It’s a custom made deck and it consist s mostly of the Russian phrases that was on the information for the subreddit. I try and do a bit everyday and I think the only words on there I remember, which haven’t already appeared on duolingo, the question and answer for names and “what’s this called in Russian?”. I try and remember the cards but honestly I never have a clue even if i keep getting the same card. For people who didn’t find success with anki, what did you use to learn vocabulary? And for those who did well by using anki, is there anything I should be doing to get the most out of the app?

I want to create flashcards with my native language (or English) sentence on the front, and the corresponding target language sentence on the back of the card. I prefer sentences, instead of single words. I noticed over time that I remember and understand better like that.

I study a STEM degree, so don't have much free time, and find it time consuming to create my own sentences in English (or my native language), then having to translate each single sentence into my target language with DeepL/Google Translate, and then having to copy/paste each single sentence into my Anki deck.

While browsing through old Reddit posts, I saw some users suggest taking sentences from a book/website instead of translating them. This idea makes sense, but 1) I would first need to find a good database/PDF where to find those sentences and 2) find a quick and efficient way to create Anki flashcards out of it.

I know about Tatoeba.org, but when downloading a list of sentences, there are many redundant sentences. It seems possible to create a python script (with help from ChatGPT) to filter out duplicate sentences in English/your native language, while keeping the several different target language translations and then import the file into Anki (so in Anki it would look like this: Front Card: sentence in English. Back Card: all the different target languages translations)

I also found an Anki deck on AnkiWeb with over 15'000 sentences from English into my target language. https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1713927804 Some people in the comments/reviews of the deck say there are some translation mistakes, but for now, aside of a tendency to use more formal pronouns, I haven't found mistakes.

I just wonder if someone here found something else, or better/more efficient, for someone in my situation, so I can save time. There are surely some people here who faced similar issues and found a neat/efficient solution.

hello guys

I'm pretty ambitious when it comes to learning languages and I've been trying numerous applications for a certain time

I find myself very happy with this application but I'm getting banned over and over again for some kind of sexual behavior according to the words of moderation team or support

i've been trying to make a new account over and over again for the sake of practicing

I just keep being removed over and over again even though I'm using VPN even though I'm trying to make my accounts from other devices different IP addresses

I'm always getting the same message even when I don't talk to people at all

I'm just wondering whether someone had experience with this application when it comes to similar things

I have found certain posts with people having similar problems and they have been saying that most of the time when you are reported no one actually even bothers to check that You are just automatically banned

Thank you for your help

sorry for asking maybe this place is not appropriate but apparently apparently they don't have their own subreddit

Hi, I’m fluent in English and Spanish. I comprehend and also use Portuguese and Italian everyday for years now and feel fairly comfortable with both. I am looking to pick up a new language and I’m torn. I’ve tried making a pro and con list but still can’t decide. I could learn French and Romanian at the same time since they would be useful and have already had exposure to French growing up. However I have absolutely 0 experience and exposure to Romanian. How easy is Romanian to pick up?I don’t know if I would even use Romanian but I would definitely use French. Russian is something I’ve wanted to learn for forever but I always put it off; i have a Russian boyfriend who I live with so it would be really easy to practice and submerge myself since I’ve been hearing it every day for the past year. Lastly, I have a A2 level Japanese I used to use for work and friends however it is no longer relevant but I feel like I employed so much time to learn kanji that it would be a waste to throw it aside. I’m willing to learn 2 languages at a time. I’m willing to invest time and I pick things up pretty well I’m just scrambled. Please if anyone has any suggestions, as to what would be the most convenient for me to learn based on my experience/situation lol.

Hello everyone!

What are some courses/workbooks you can recommend for someone who's a beginner in learning English? My mom wants to learn, and while I'll be helping her, I'm not sure which books or sources are best for someone starting out on their own. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and I hope you all have a wonderful day and night!

It took me ten years to get Spanish. It’s taken me a year to get Portuguese. It’s taken 12 for Russian to B1. I’m stubborn. I want to add German because I have so many business clients as Germans. Anyone else an absolute idiot w languages w a shit memory but still kept going and became highly functional multi lingual professionally? I’m an American raised monolingual by the way. All learning happened in my late 20s-30s. I’m 39 now.

If I don’t practice them every day I begin to forget quickly. So I just force myself to make time.

Hey everyone!

I've created an app called Vocabolino to make reading, translating, saving, and learning new words with mobile flashcards super easy! 📱💡

Here's how it works: If you come across unfamiliar words while browsing the internet, simply use the app's Chrome extension to translate them and save them to your personal vocabulary list. Then, you can learn all your new vocabulary with mobile flashcards, anytime, anywhere. 📚✨

I'm passionate about making the learning process easier and more efficient, and I believe Vocabolino can help achieve that goal.

Check it out here: www.vocabolino.com

And now, I'm looking for beta testers to help me fine-tune the app! If you're interested in trying it out and providing feedback, please send me a message. Your input will be invaluable in making Vocabolino the best it can be! 🙌

Let's make vocabulary learning fun and effective together! 🌟 #BetaTestersWanted

The programming on Duolingo is abyssmal. I complete a lesson such as practising pronunciation or correcting mistakes, get notification of earning 20 points on completion but the points never post. This problem has shown up in the past and has reoccured again today after having been fixed months ago. What a shame! Time to look elsewhere for language studies!

For me i started learning Spanish on Duolingo in 5th grade obviously i was young so I didn’t get very far but i started taking Spanish classes in 8th grade and started listening to music and translating that way :)

I also just started learning Korean very recently so the first thing I did was look up the Hangul alphabet and wrote down notes in a notebook until I could memorize it

I’m pretty fluent in Mexican Spanish,I’m a intermediate and can understand almost every conversation, I love going to Mexico and staying there but I feel I get bored of the language as I hear it every day and nothings new. I really want to learn Portuguese and I actually enjoy learning it. I think I will practice Spanish every day so I’m fluent for my family and learn Portuguese on the side .
