How to best practice with a foreign language speaker who wants to practice English?

Hey everyone, I have had the fortune of finding conversation partners to help me with Japanese while I help them with English. However I think their English and my Japanese might not be good enough to communicate, or at maybe not food enough to communicate where we make mistakes. For reference I have a year of Duolingo practice in Japanese.

Anyway, how do you think we can best use our time in video/voice chat? By general conversation? Any tips? Thanks.
